OUGD603 - Typeface design - Sketch form ideas

Following research into Grainger Town and typeface design I decided to start sketching rough graphical elements derived from The Doric Order which is the most used order in Grainger Town. It's also the simplest order with clean lines and shapes which could be transferred into a typeface. From research I seen that the main characteristics are the simple circular capitals at the top of columns, it and the slightly tapered column and that either have no individual base or instead rest directly on the stylobate (stone platform below columns). Other characteristics include the columns which are fluted and are of sturdy, if not stocky, proportions

The link between the anatomy of type and the anatomy of the Doric Order is also rather tangible as I linked characteristics.

Similarities like the:

  • Stylobate/base = slab or serif
  • Drum = Stem
  • Cornice = Ear/Apex

Sketches were made reimagining these characteristics in relation to the similarities.

From here I could begin visualising key letterforms and a slab style typeface
