Kerning Lecture & Kerndown game

Today we had a brief introduction into kerning and played an interesting game called kerndown.
We didn't go into too much detail about kerning just the common problems like kerning V,W and Y.
I learned about optical and manual kerning, metric kerning uses kern pairs, which are included in most fonts, kern pairs contain information about the specific pairs of letters. Optical kerning adjusts the spacing between adjacent characters based on their shapes.

Kerndown was a kerning version of countdown, so we had to pick consonats and vowels. Our group picked A,m,g,s and a. The aim of the game was to create a word that represented three different companies but was the same word. Our first attempt at a word was 'sag' but then we changed it to 'Am'.The first company was a cafe then the second was a electronic store then the final was a university store for masters students.

The second task was to create names for a company the tutors chose, for example we had to pick a name for a pest control company so we chose 'gas' then for a student night we just kept the same name but increased the kerning. The point of this task I believe was to show us that a single word can stand for numerous meanings by using kerning in different ways.

This set of letters stood for a luxury car company,we were limited with letters but thought 'asg' worked well for a car company because it flows well. The kerning is spaced out to show this flow.

This one is communicating a children's cartoon show, once again we were limited with letters but thought a playful layout would make the type seem more like a cartoon show.

This one is a Quentin Taratino film name, we named it gas but with the 'a' the wrong way. We'd already used 'gas' twice for this exercise but thought spacing the 'a' and 's' would give it a twist you'd expect in a Tarantino film.
