OUGD504 - Studio brief 01 - Research

During research I stumbled across De Amsterdamse Krulletter, its a book that focuses on the curly letter of Amsterdam, which is a highly skilled form of calligraphy found on traditional Dutch brown bar windows. The Krulletter's presence has been somewhat deminished in this day and age, fortunately, the books photographs do justice to the art form in it’s environment. I was able to shoot a few images of Krulletter type while in Amsterdam so researching into this book was helpful, ways in which type in Amsterdam was presented was inspiring as Ive found it hard to find books on type in specific locations. The book just shows a snapshot of a particular piece of typography not a variation, but the book helped me see how type can be celebrated in the form of a book.

The book is a hardcover bind with embossed type on the cover, it would have had a high production cost due to the bind and hard cover. The target audience is most likely graphic designers and typographers, who would pay highly for a book of this standard.
