OUGD504 - Studio brief 01 - Bind process

Following on from cutting the book using the power guillotine the binding process began, it started with the nipping press which is used to hold books in place for bookbinding. The force of the press clamps the pages together to enable to glue to hold better, I first used bulldog clips to hold the spine of the book together then placed the book into the nipping press, placing cardboard underneath and on top of the book to stop the press marking the print. I then applied a layer of pva glue to the spine for the initial bind, then added a layer of scrim which is a fabric that reinforces the binding of a book. I left the book in the nipping press overnight to allow it to dry.

Overnight the glue and scrim dried allowing the pages to bind together, the final bind went to plan but the nipping press left a crease down the side of the book. What caused this was too much pressure on the cardboard which was applied on top of the book, it is visible in the first half of the book but the crease disappears towards the end of the book.
