OUGD503 - Studio brief 02 - Research

I looked into French typography of the past and present to fully understand the styles of the countries typography. Research included looking into the typeface PS Fournier and neoclassical type design.

Above is the typeface PS Fournier, it was created by Stéphane Elbaz and was designed in tribute to Pierre Simon Fournier. Fournier was the prolific Parisian type designer of the most iconic incarnation of what today would be called the French transitional style. PS Fournier successfully represents the transition to the modern era of typography and can work in any context. Pierre Simon Fournier is an innovative type designer of mid-18th century. The young Pierre Simon developed a strong aesthetic early in his career that he kept developing throughout his life. Fournier created one of the most influential set of typefaces of his time and left behind an immense heritage that can symbolise French typography. His work is probably one of the most iconic of the Age of Enlightenment, the pre-revolutionary era. Precursor of the Modern style, Fournier’s body of work deeply influenced his times, and created the fertile ground from which the Didot family and Giambattista Bodoni developed their own styles. PS Fournier is designed to adapt to any situation with its intermediate optical size and is a great example of a traditional french typeface revived to feel more modern. It can represent the French transitional style yet bring clean feel.  One good part of research was looking at how Neoclassicism influenced typography and printing in France, typefaces began to be modernized and refined therefore stepping away from calligraphy. Bodoni and Didot were born from this and typographers have callled them modern since.
