OUGD505 - Appropriation seminar and task

Seminar notes

Appropriation in fine art

  • To question authorship and authenticity
  • To question what art can be
  • To investigate process and making
  • To question the value and meaning of mass culture

Cultural Appropriation

  • Often used when thinking of fashion
  • Western culture appropriating eastern culture, and a recent example of this would be Scarlett Johansson being cast in Ghost in the shell
  • Stranger Things opening sequenced being informed by 80s type and synth music
  • Stranger Things pastiche poster which is similar to Star Wars posters
  • Gigi Hadid modelling as a middle eastern woman

The appropriation task we were set was to make use of old magazines and newspapers and make a collage design. Using what we learnt about appropriation during the seminar we had to aim to make our collages relate to something political, social or cultural.

My collage is titled 'Don't trespass against us' but it also has a concept behind it with it being a propaganda film poster. I collated all the imagery I could find of world leaders and placed their heads onto anything related to either war or something that shows a situation of power. Sadly for Angela Merkel she had to settle for what looks like a 90s girl group dancing, with the gun fingers the only signifier of power. In the poster Putin is overlooking Merkel's dance while Donald Trump stands boldly with his heavy machine gun to ward of any potential trespassers. I really enjoyed putting the collage together as it was a chance to step away from the Macbook for a day and get more hands on.
