Studio Brief 04
Research

For feedback on my blank brief I wanted to know which nightclubs my peers frequently visited and enjoyed, I asked a varied group with different music tastes to get a better perspective of nightlife. The most frequent answers were as follows, Mint club, The Warehouse, Wire club, Canal Mills, Hifi, Headrow House and Belgrave music hall.

I felt the best place to start research was looking into nightclubs and event spaces my peers / freshers would normally visit. As a first year student I've experienced a number of Leeds's most popular clubs so I have an opinion on most of them but some I still haven't visited yet so I researched into key facts and what makes them special.

Mint Club
Open for well over a decade, Mint Club is an intimate nightclub found in the heart of Leeds. In 2008 the club underwent a considerable upgrade, and now features a Funktion One soundsystem. Its considerable audio component is backed up by an elaborate "Disco Panel" display, the same as Berlin's famed Watergate, and the first of its kind in the UK. The club features a mixture of techno, house, dubstep and drum & bass events.

The Warehouse
More than thirty years after first opening back in 1979, The Warehouse is a legendary Leeds music venue. This is the place that started it all, opening up even before the Hacienda. From the late 70’s, The Warehouse introduced a whole new culture and became the epicentre of music and clubbing in the North of England. Having played host to some memorable bands and DJ’s over the years with everyone from Frankie Goes to Hollywood to Sugar Hill Gang, Oasis to The Stone Roses, Sasha, Greg Wilson, LFO and Mike Pickering. Brand new Funktion One Dance Stacks tower above the dancefloor as well as lighting rigs, colour lasers and CO2 jets.

Wire Club
Wire is one of Leeds finest clubs pushing quality underground music in a friendly and intimate environment. Powered by a full Funktion One Soundsystem and fuelled by a selection of the best imported bottled beers and spirits. Wire is host to some of Leeds’ longest running and most revered club nights such as Acetate/Butter Side Up/Rewind/Dancehall Science and many more. Providing a great selection of events across the musical spectrum. Since it’s inception, Wire has played host to the likes of… Theo Parrish, Four Tet, Ben UFO, Floating Points, Simian Mobile Disco, Michael Mayer, Erol Alkan, Dixon, Matthew Dear, Blawan, Joy O and many more . . .

Canal Mills
Canal Mills draws on its creative past, rooted within the backbone of the industrial revolution to create a dynamic space that intertwines historic and modern day creativity whilst ultimately playing host to unique, bespoke events in Leeds. Interweaving the lines of its own authentic history and the unbounded innovation of modern art, the venue offers up a revolutionary space unique of its type in Leeds. Canal Mills itself is an artefact that visually awakens the traditional processes of the textile mill from which its creative heredity stems, in a modern environment. The venue will showcase a range of artistic pursuits from exhibitions, theatrical projects and film screenings, to live gigs and electronic dance events, all the while sustaining the unique aesthetic elements born from the heart of its heritage as a textile mill.

Hifi
The HiFi Club originally opened in 2001 after the closure of the much loved Leeds City Centre venue, The Underground. Promoters Ed Mason, John Morelli & Steven Allison snapped up the basement venue and quickly moved across all the staff and a host of hugely popular clubnights (many of which exist right on through to the present day)! The HiFi Club is now home a range of DJ led and live music nights based around a variety of musical genres including Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Motown, Reggae and Disco. There’s also comedy every Saturday night and special events that take place at The HiFi Club throughout the year!

Headrow House
Built in the early 1900s, Headrow House is a former textile mill located in one of the Leeds historic yards in the vibrant city centre. After 10 years of neglect Headrwo House has recently been transformed into a multi use arts and event space comprised of 4 floors, three bars, one restaurant, one beer hall, three outdoor areas, one cocktail bar and a purpose build 150 capacity live room.

Belgrave music hall
Located in Leeds’ vibrant Northern Quarter, Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen first opened its doors in 1934 as Leeds Children’s Palace; a 3-storey recreation hall and nursery school built to provide childcare support for the working families of Leeds. After many years of neglect, the building has been restored to its former glory and reopened under the name Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen, with a hope that it will provide artists and performers with a unique new platform in one of the UK’s most creative cities. Spread over three floors, the venue comprises of two bars, two kitchens, a 200 capacity event space and a spectacular roof terrace.
